Working to raise health awareness in our community
Health and Fitness isn’t something that should be sheltered away, but rather shared in ways which will impact a community in a positive way. We believe that the health and fitness services being offered can be a vehicle for social change in matters of personal and community health. All fitness center members are encouraged to join Duke's Fitness Center in their sponsorship of these events by participating on our event team.
VTSO Spinning® Marathon:
It was a good way to welcome spring. Members and staff representing Duke's Fitness Center participated in the seventh annual Spinning Marathon to benefit the Vermont Special Olympics at the Sheraton Hotel in South Burlington. On Saturday On Saturday, March 25th the sixth annual Spinning Marathon to benefit the Vermont Special Olympics took place at the Sheraton Hotel in South Burlington, VT. Duke’s Fitness Center would like to give a special thanks to the local participants: Dan Marlow, David Marlow, Sabrina Kane, Lindsay Thieken, Jan Sweet, Colleen Yandow, and Duke’s Fitness owner Nate Yandow of St. Albans, Vermont. Together they raised over $2,000 of the $37,000 raised by 200 event participants combined. Everyone was moved by the inspirational Spinning instructors from around the country. Local Special Olympians told their heartfelt stories and volunteered their time. Some local musicians, along with Top Hat DJ service provided musical entertainment for the six hours of intense Spinning. Duke’s Fitness Center would like to thank the people of our community for their generous donations and support, and look forward to next year’s event.

Duke's in ACS's Relay For Life:
Each year, the Duke’s Fitness Center team participates in the annual “Relay for Life” fund raiser and relay event which is an American Cancer Society event. “Relay for Life” consists of team participation in a 24 hour relay walk to raise funds and awareness of the devastating effects of cancer. The local event is a small part of a nation wide event in which cancer survivors, their family members and friends, and advocates form teams to participate in a 24 hour relay walk held at the Collins Perley Sports Complex in St Albans, VT. Duke’s Fitness Center has been a continuing participant in the American Cancer Society’s “Relay for Life” event by raising funds and awareness of the devastating effects cancer has on personal health. Cancer is not just an individual problem but a social problem. Cancer risks though genetically linked can be reduced and managed with the appropriate diet and exercise plan.
Fitness Food Drive Against Hunger:
Duke's Fitness is committed to serving the community. Each year we will take on the task of collecting non-perishable foods in support of a local food shelf. Hunger isn't a seasonal problem so openly we invite our fitness center members to make a donation of non-perishable food items to the local food shelf anytime during the course of the year. During the Holiday Season, bring non-perishable food items directly to our gym between November 1st and January 31st.
Join Duke's in The Run For Jim:
The Maple festival wanes as April gives way to May. With the March comes the Maple Festival sap run. Yet such an event isn’t exclusive to April as May brings The Run for Jim, a more significant event for the community. Each year, participants engage in an event named in honor of Bellow's Free Academy of Saint Albans school teacher Jim Bashaw who succumbed to cancer. The event is held to benefit regional efforts to combat disease. Participants choose either to run or walk, it is up to them. Duke’s Fitness Center is getting together a team who will be participating in the event in hopes of raising $2,000. If you already plan on participating in the event, please Join Duke’s in The Run for Jim Bashaw this May as a member of the Duke’s Fitness Center Team. And If you do wish to participate, please contact Nate Yandow. Duke's Fitness Center members, friends and family are invited to represent Duke's Fitness Center in The Run For Jim Foundation benefit race. Proceeds from the race will be used to aid families in the area dealing with catastrophic illness. Your participation will make a difference. Learn more visiting the Vermont Maple Festival website. The Run for Jim Foundation has raised over $200,000 to date.
